Bio

Joseph D. Portoghese, MD, FACS, is board certified in general surgery and specializes in both general surgery and minimally invasive surgery for an array of medical conditions like hernia repair, gallbladder disease and the surgical treatment of thyroid and parathyroid problems. His passion for ensuring both surgery patients and surgical residents receive the latest in technology, techniques and positive outcomes is evidenced by his many leadership positions.

During his tenure with Florida Hospital, Dr. Portoghese served as President of Medical Staff from 2004 to 2006, and then established the accredited General Surgery Residency Program, where he was the Program Director. He is currently the Chief Academic Officer.

Dr. Portoghese is a graduate of the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, where he also completed his residency training and conducted surgical oncology research. He has served as a clerkship faculty member for Florida State University College of Medicine since 2002 and was appointed Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery for the University of Central Florida College of Medicine in 2007.
